Lead Learning Designer

Outside Influence

As a young child, Kevin would wake up at dawn to accompany his older brother as he worked on a nearby farm. He developed a deep love of nature, eventually pursuing his PhD in biology and working in expeditionary learning with Outward Bound and eventually helped start the Mountain School and the Island School

From Lab to Classroom

His pivot from scientist to educator came after a period of reflection prompted by his dissertation advisor, who had witnessed how deeply he connected with his students as a TA. Rather than pursue a postdoc fellowship and eventual career in academia, Kevin became an independent school teacher and has been working in education ever since.

All kids are capable of learning at high levels, and they deserve the opportunity to do so.

Shifting the Paradigm

Early in his career, Kevin realized teachers could benefit from learning science, but the research hadn’t made the leap into the classroom. His mission became clear: bridge theory and practice, empowering educators and improving student outcomes. This led to his 30-year affiliation with the Klingenstein Center of Teachers College Columbia University.

A Holistic Perspective

For Kevin, education begins with connectionmeeting each learner where they are and understanding their motivations and experiences. This human-centered approach infuses his work at PLUSSED, where he helps schools implement systemic change and builds programs to expand educational opportunities for all.
